Thursday 1st February - walk ***** – Holywells Park and Waterfront in Ipswich – sunny.

With a run of mild and breezy weather coming I was keen to have a day with Mags today so we decided to pack a picnic and drove over to Holywells Park in Ipswich to see if we could spot the otter that has moved in recently! I did my exercises first thing before heading over to Ipswich in wall to wall sunshine parking in a side road off landseer Road and took the back way into the park following the stream leading to the main park with one eye open for the otter as we were not sure where it has been spotted. The stream and lakes are sadly covered in duckweed which the moorhens seem not to mind as it makes up a lot of their diet! Then passing the first large wild pond we see a geese flapping about, spooked by something, then I spot the otter close to the shore whizzing about on some fallen trees, Mag sees it too and I get the camera ready. Then something amazing happens as the otter chases the goose out of the water and follows it right onto the middle of the footpath in front of several people, sadly for me I failed to get a pic of it, much too slow! We then get a few more brief sights of the otter as it flashes about in the duck weed. We spoke to a nice lady who had seen it in both lakes and got a lovely pic of the otter in the green duck weed, I was only a littel jealous! We waited for ages but the otter had disappeared so we continued on our loop around the lovely park with some top trees with loads of birds and squirrels flitting about! RToilet break at the stables where the new café looked busy, past the conservatory to our bench by the smaller lake for our picnic and were entertained by gull, pigeons, a rat, ducks, mandarins , a squirrell and a robin, we had a yummy picnic too but it was a tad on the chilly side despite the sunshine! We head back to the large lake, no otter spotted so we make our way down to Ipswich Waterfront making it to the old customs house and back to Holywells and back past the lake and onto out van knackered after having walked nearly 4 miles! We then take the back lane back through Levington and see a large herd of deer just before we reach the level crossing:)
